Outlander is a series I had on my list on NetFlix for a while but never got around to it until recently.
Synopsis - The Outlander series focuses on 20th-century British nurse Claire Randall (played by Caitríona Balfe), a former World War II military nurse in Scotland in 1945, who time travels to 18th-century Scotland. She finds herself transported back in time to 1743 through an unexpected portal. There, she encounters, falls in love with and marries a Highland warrior named Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) from the Clan Fraser of Lovat while still being married to Frank Randall in her 1945 life.
It is based on the series of historical fantasy novels by American author Diana Gabaldon. I have not read the book series, so I cannot comment much on it, but since the TV series is based on the book series, it would have to be a close capture.
TICKLED MY FANCY (HIGHLIGHTS)
The portrayal of history in almost everything - From the land, costumes, customs, houses, speech, habits, folk, etc. the story weaved through two completely different times, meticulously showcasing different eras. It was refreshing to see the back and forth of history from different centuries. If you are not a history buff or do not appreciate history, this is not for you.
The characters - While most of the characters did an awesome job. My vote was definitely for Jamie and Claire. They were simply fantastic. They created a great vibe and chemistry. It also helped that they spoke English in their accents, which made it so real.
The Mohawks and the other Indians - I loved that the Mohawks and other Indian tribes were carefully blended into the mix. It would have been nice to show more of their history and customs.
The idea of time travel - I heard about time travel years ago, but it is not something we would believe unless I had met someone who had travelled through time. The idea seems so far-fetched but yet so real. Imaginations can run wild if you think about those possibilities. It is truly a fantastic fantasy world to put yourself in - Fantasy or reality? One gets a feel for what the characters think and feel in every action, event, or encounter.
Plots and Subplots - The overall plot of the series stretches into several sub-plots within each season, keeping the series going
A WORD OF CAUTION (LOWLIGHTS)
The length of the series - It got tiring at times. The sheer length of the series was a bit much that I kept checking to see when it would end. It almost dragged during the seasons in between.
Overdone - Some parts were overdone and unnecessary. For example, in the scene where Jamie and Claire are trapped in the house and under siege by the Committee of Safety, in previous seasons, there were some ship scenes, etc.
Nudity and Sex scenes - There are some sexually explicit scenes in the first few seasons, so be advised if this is not for you.
Gore - If you have a weak stomach for blood and war scenes, this is not for you.
My overall rating is a 9 out of 10. Overlooking the lowlights, I think it is a good series for anyone who can withstand 7 seasons (as of now on NetFlix).
